Quilts of Valor Foundation |
The Quilts of Valor Foundation was started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts of Seaford, DE. Her son was about to deploy to Iraq, when she had a dream about a returning soldier struggling with his war demons. He was sitting on his bed wrapped in a quilt that brought him great comfort.
Our Blue Ridge Chapter began in the summer of 2017 and as of November 2024, we will have awarded over 376 quilts to local veterans. We cover the honorably discharged Veterans in Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania and Polk Counties.
Each Veteran must be nominated through the Quilts of Valor Foundation website;
The quilts are “awarded” in a ceremony where each Veteran is recognized for their service.
Nationally, there are over 600 groups like ours as well as many individuals making quilts as tangible reminders of gratitude and honor for our brave Veterans. We thank them for their service, their sacrifice and their valor. They do not need to be combat wounded, however some wounds are physical, some psychological.
We are open to anyone wishing to make quilts to honor these Veterans; they do not need to be a guild member, even though we are sponsored by the Western NC Quilters Guild.
To learn more, see our upcoming meeting dates on the Beginnings Quilt Shop Calendar. www.beginningsquiltshop.com
We meet once a month to sew, pick up supplies, share ideas and show and tell of finished tops and quilts. The fellowship is terrific! We do not meet in December or in case of inclement weather.
