    Back by Popular Demand

The Pizza Girls got their name from the way they package their fabrics. Their specialty is making kits, coordinating fabrics for maximum impact for each project and then packaging them to look like pizzas.

In this Show & Tell Cindy and Patti will present Antique Needlework. They have collected antique needlework for a long time. We will get to look at and touch samples from the 1800s, including lots of white work/Ayshire samples.

The discussion will be the history of cotton manufacturing and fashion trends from the late 1700s to World War I. If you stitch at all, you will appreciate the work in these samples.

Cindy and Patti will also bring fabric collections, patterns, rulers, and kits to sell after the Show & Tell.

The lunch bunch is going to West First at 101 First Ave. W. (sign up at Guild Mtg)

Color! An Engineer’s guide to color value and color placement in your quilts

This is a return visit for Charles. He so impressed the guild last year that we wanted to invite him back for more color and style inspiration.

As an engineer, Charles approaches color selection and placement in quilts in a very methodical way. In this talk he’ll discuss several strategies for selecting fabric colors and their placement when planning your quilt to add interest and depth. He promises there aren’t any quizzes or mathematical equations!

The talk is in 3 parts: Charles begins with a brief discussion on color theory basics (the color wheel, and concepts: hue, tone, shade, and value). In the second part he shares quilts that he's sewn using other designers’ patterns and discusses different ideas for color placement. In the third part he shares his own original designs, and discusses the approach to how colors were selected to enhance the overall effect and design.

Tilted Tiles: An introduction to Semi-improv Techniques

‘Semi-improv’ is a technique for those who want the look and feel of improv, but who aren’t quite ready to give up their rulers.

The workshop will kick off with a detailed overview of the pattern to orient participants. Hands-on instruction will be provided for each step of the Tilted Tiles quilt pattern and classroom time will be allowed for participants to progress toward making a 36” x 36” wall handing or 18” x 72” table runner of your own.

The pattern uses efficient, traditional piecing techniques, and multiple block sizes, each with their own choose-your-own-adventure-style instructions for the creation of a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Blocks are made from modular subunits which are mixed-and-matched in interesting color and value combinations to create visual interest and flow. The subunits can be assembled in various orientations and sewn together in numerous configurations. The blocks are constructed larger than required using traditional piecing techniques, then trimmed with a ruler, improv-style to give each block a ‘tilted’ or ‘wonky’ look which adds variety and movement to the assembled quit top.

The $40 workshop fee is payable to the guild.

The $15 pattern is payable to Charles directly.

Bring 4 half yards of fabric in various colors and color values. A 12.5” square quilting ruler is highly recommended.

    Quilt as Desired

Those three words "quilt as desired" strike fear in many quilters. Cheryl Brickey will share a step-by-step process you can use to help determine which quilt design you should use on your quilts, whether you are quilting it yourself or sending it out to a quilting professional. This helps you decide between allover versus custom patterns, which designs to use, and even quilting density and thread color. She will show many of her quilts and discuss how she decided the quilting patterns for each.

Cheryl is a chemical engineer who loves designing quilts and quilt math. She is the author of Just One Charm Pack Quilts, Just Two Charm Pack Quilts, and Modern Plus Sign Quilts.

Cheryl has had her work published in major quilt magazines and won awards in international quilt shows. She created her company Meadow Mist Designs to bridge her technical background with a love of quilting to deliver classic and modern quilt patterns.

Cheryl lives in South Carolina with her husband, two school-age kids, and four cats.

The lunch bunch will go to Tooley's Cafe at 1729 Brevard Rd. (Sign up at mtg.)

Attendees do not need to pre-cut any fabric before the workshop, but they can if they would like, as cutting will be discussed in the workshop.

The $25 workshop fee is payable to the guild.
